Opportunities for fun are abundant during the last month before the back-to-school season. Snacks and Scales and Turtle Tales | Berks Parks and Recreation | 8/2/15 | Children and families are welcome to learn about animals found in Gring’s Mill Park as part of the of the Berks Parks and Recreation Kids Summer Series. Reptile expert and education Phil Witman will teach participants about snakes, turtles, and more in this fun workshop. Local reptiles will be present to interact safely with kids. The workshop is free ($2 parking donation) and begins at 4 p.m. Bring blankets and lawn chairs for comfort and refreshments will be served. |
Reading Fair | PA Association County Fairs | 8/2-8/8/15 | The fair is back at the Reading Fairgrounds in Leesport from August 2nd to 8th. This exciting event will feature rides, shows, farm animals, crafts, and more. Admission is only $10 per person and includes parking, unlimited rides, and access to all entertainment. Children under 36” are always free. Please see the fair website for specific hours each day and special discounts. |
Beginner Paddle Boarding Workshop | Army Corps of Engineers Blue Marsh Lake | 8/7/15 | Participants interested in the fun sport of paddle boarding are welcome to this paddle skills workshop for all ages. Trained professionals will teach an informative session on kayak and canoe paddling skills, including paddle strokes, boat safety, and the proper use of gear. No prior experience is necessary. 45-minute workshops will begin at 5:00, 5:45, 6:30 and 7:15 pm and six participants will be accepted into each time slot. Summer’s End 5K Race | Big Vision Foundation | 8/12/15 | Participants of all ages are invited to the Big Vision Sports Complex in Leesport for this 5K race. The course will feature different surfaces such as gravel, pavement, and grass to resemble a cross country race. The complex itself is modeled after Fenway Park and is a beautiful, scenic location to celebrate the end of summer. Awards will be given out in six different age categories for men and women plus an overall winner. The 5K begins at 6 p.m. and is $10 in advance, $15 the day of. There will also be a 1 mile fun run/walk beginning at 6:15 p.m. for $5 in advance and $10 the day of. Additional donations are appreciated and all proceeds benefit the Big Vision Foundation. |
Flea Market at Leesport Farmers Market | Leesport Farmers Market | 8/16/15 | The Leesport Farmers Market is hosting its bi-monthly flea market on August 2nd and 16th from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. All our welcome to come browse the offerings of local and regional vendors. A wide range of items for sale will be displayed in both sheltered and outdoor areas. Admission is free! |
The Joshua Davis Loop Group Performance | Berks Parks and Recreation | 8/16/15 | Check out this unique and entertaining musical group as part of the recurring Berks Parks and Recreation Performing Arts in The Park concert series in the amphitheater of the Gring’s Mill Recreation Area at 6 p.m. The Joshua Davis Loop Group will perform original songs in their custom style incorporating elements of jazz, classical, Indian, funk, and pop. Admission is free, but there will be $5 donation requested for parking. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for comfort and refreshments will be served. |
Reading Fightin Phillies Home Game | Reading Fightin Phillies | 8/21/15 | Come check out a home game of the Reading Fightin Phillies in FirstEnergy Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The team is a Double A Affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. |
International Festival | Muhlenberg Township Parks and Recreations | 8/29/15 | Come celebrate international culture at this festival at Jim Dietrich Park in Reading from 11 a.m to 6 p.m. The event will feature food, live performances, games, crafts, and a beer garden. Bring lawn chairs or blankets to relax during the day. This fun family event is free! |
